History

Gary Knight started his working life as a post man treadling the streets of NSW country town Lockhart, thereafter serving in the Victorian Police Force with Melbourne, Wangaratta and Wodonga postings. Letetia had an accountancy beginning also in Lockhart, but any career ideas were placed on hold following Gary with his employment & of course motherhood duties.

Around 1973, Gary first found an interest in signwriting, watching tradespeople at work as he performed his patrol duties. In his spare time he helped local Wangaratta signwriters produce signs, learning as much as he could. After moving to Wodonga still with the Victoria Police, he eventually had enough work as a signmaker to start his own signwriting business. With Letetia developing her artistic flair, she was there to assist in more ways than one. Helping & painting in the small typical backyard signshop, babysitting the kids at the same time. It wasn’t long before the desire to expand increased with renting a small shed and employing the first apprentice.

During this time Signs By Knight went thru many logo and company colour schemes. The most popular was the armour clad old English Knight with signwriting brush and paint pallet. The business grew as the demand for signage in Wodonga also started to develop. Gary & Letetia built their first dedicated signshop / factory in 1980. With staff numbers rising to 10 another factory move eventuated, to our present location and staff numbers of consistently 15.

Attached are many photos showing the different vehicles and themes we had over the years and our dedicated staff in house Security “ Puss “ as we call him. “Puss” was only a kitten when introduced to his duties at the factory. Apart from controlling vermin & law breakers he constantly sought cuddles from staff and also took much pleasure in entertaining customers.

A brief look at the history of Signs By Knight and of 30 years to date. We are extremely confident, “ The Next Generation “ will enjoy the success, many friendships amid the challenges that small business & particularly the signage industry offer. Perhaps a 3rd generation of family members to come ? a very gratifying thought..
